I decided to go with this size and aesthetic because I adore the color green (especially lime green). I currently have a Moleskine sketchbook in this color too. The character is a portrait of myself and the title is supposed to seem like a sticker.
-
The introduction was written over and over again because I had so many ideas and they were all so overwhelming yet exciting (mostly exciting). I am definitely adding snippets from my other drafts into future chapters/sections of this book.
-
Chapter/section divider for my dad's stories
-
Early memories of my father working in the fields as a kid with my grandfather and uncle. My grandmother would stop by with lunch and sometimes help with the field work.
-
My dad's restaurant days in Mexico before moving to the United States. He was 16-17 years old when he worked at La Posta (means "somewhere with a lot of variety").
-
A significant memory of my dad when he worked at La Posta. I really enjoyed imagining him in the bodega/warehouse.
-
An illustration of food he was offered to take home every now and then. Caldo de Pollo (chicken soup) and Carne de Puerco (pork).
-
My dad told me about his father's bad habits of spending his money on alcohol and partying.
-
My concluding thoughts and feelings after listening to the stories about my grandfather. Stories that I haven't heard before that make me understand him more as well as my dad.I feel closer to both of them.
-
Drawing and observations of my dad as he took this huge step in his life, moving to the U.S. for job opportunities.
-
Introducing three women throughout my dad's first years in the U.S.
-
My family's 2 story house with 4 bedrooms and two bathrooms. This house is practically in the middle of nowhere. It's actually quite old, farm-style, and not as big as it seems but it's definitely cozy!
-
Simple and comforting moments in the Velazquez-Aviles household. Card games, movie nights, computer games, and laughing at the dinner table. Feeling nostalgic every time I look at these. I am adding more like these throughout the book.
