My name is Esmeralda Benavidez and I am a first generation Salvadoran American based in Los Angeles. As an artist, my passions lie in many places; I am curious about all forms of image making and I try to incorporate them into my designs. Along with explorative image making, I love playing with colors in my designs and pushing how color combinations can convey feelings and tones throughout my work.

The Hive, the Bee and the Stories

This children's book was created for the purpose of minimizing our fear of Honeybees. The book contains illustrations of the different types of honeybees and how to differentiate them as well as other fun folklore that surrounds them.

One of the first spreads of the book is the Introduction. This explains the purpose of the book being to take away the fear we develop towards Honeybees and how they are not creatures to be afraid of.

This spread is one of the first interactive spreads the reader finds. The objective is to use the previous pages to help them distinguish the appearance of a queen bee among the mass.

This portion of the book contains more long-form stories that have line illustrations which interact with the text and correspond with the specific section of the story.

In the final spread of the book, the reader finds a collage of all the illustrations found throughout the book. The images themselves overlap and combine colors in order to create an illusion of busy buzzing.

Uproot: An organization about Sustainability

Uproot is a group that focuses on sustainability. Their goal is to teach sustainable lifestyles without being too overbearing. The aim to be inclusive and educational to both younger and older generations.

This is a recruitment poster features a line from their manifesto in which they advocate for making small changes to our lifestyle to make a better future.

These tote bags serve as takeaways from workshops that Uproot would conduct and support the idea of sustainability since these bags are reusable.

These pins are also tokens that people receive at workshops and help people feel like they belong to this community.

Generate

Generate is a platform for kids and adults alike to learn new making techniques and are encouraged to learn their origins and the importance they have in their cultures. It also promotes making art without thinking whether it will be "good" or "bad".

When entering the website, you are welcomed into the space and encouraged to explore what the site has to offer, such as tutorials on certain techniques, or just historical information on the techniques.

This section is the tutorial section where you are taught to embroider. It outlines all the tools you will need to get started and provides instructional gifs as well as written instructions for you to follow along to.

I created a series of zines that correlate with the techniques available to learn on the website. These zines highlight one artist who specifically practices the technique and showcases their work.

This zine focuses on an artist that creates artwork using quilling.
